Work In Progress

The Great Column of Humor
Printed from four woodblocks by Hans Guldenmund, Durer School, Nuremberg,
1517. This is a visual satire of architectual pretentiousness: the column
cannot stand, as its base is a turnip root! The figure at the top is the
pleasure-seeking Roman woodland demi-god Satyr, half man and half goat, from
whom we derive "satire".

The Joust / Into the Woods
Both images are from illustrations in the Manesse Codex, 14th century song
lyrics praising love and chivalry for the German troubadors called
"minnesingers". Also see my completed Earthly Delights. These charming and
naive scenes depict an era seemingly devoid of sarcasm.
