France, circa
1545.
While Henry VIII burned monastic libraries in England, his
contemporary, King Francis I, imported Italian Renaissance
artists, including Leonardo Da Vinci, into France. The creator
of the original of this nude is unknown; his pseudonym, Just
de Just, was deduced from the study of the spontaneous and
experimental arrangement of nudes in another engraving. Never
printed until this century, the plates were discovered unused
during renovations at Fontainbleu.
