A cumbersome square-rigged ship with a high bow and stern, the Galleon was adaptable both for commerce and for naval warfare. Spain used them to transport goods from the Americas. These ships were so huge that most harbors could not accommodate them; passengers and cargo had to be ferried in smaller craft. Despite their tremendous size and massive artillery, their service in the Spanish Armada brought defeat by storm and by the smaller, swifter, more maneuverable English ships in 1588.

The desperate alchemist is encouraged by folly (a figure wearing a fool's cap fans the flames of madness) toward impossible goals. His beliefs are shown by thescholar at the lectern to be "all rubbish" ("Alghe Mist"). His wife and children are hungry and penniless. The alchemist's real future is depicted outside the window of time as he and his family are received at the poorhouse.

St. Anthony represents saintly strength; he is neither cast down nor distracted by the temptations. He derives his fortitude from the teachings and songs of David, who is depicted in the hollow of the tree. “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.” Psalm 33 (Vulgate) verse 19.
