The Tradition
After a limited edition of prints has been completely printed (usually
250 prints, 5 artist's proofs and a master print) it has been my custom
to cancel the linoleum block by making a small gouge in the image area
of the design, ensuring that the edition size is not exceded. Sale of
a cancelled block includes an artist's proof print, when available, or
an edition print, and both print and block are framed in a double window.
Rights to reproduce my designs, with or without the block, are not transferred
by sale but are kept by me, the artist.
The End Game
After 38 years of printmaking, I will now (November, 2007) stop printing
any limited edition after 100 copies, even if the edition plan was for
larger amounts. There will be new first editions, but I will not make
any new second or third editions. This frees up many more blocks to cancel,
so this is a partial list. I will sell cancelled linoleum blocks at a
formula of 10x the print price plus the cost of matting and framing, making
these collectables more affordable. Prices listed inlude matting, framing,
packing, insurance and shipping.
All Blocks Are Now Available
I enjoy carving a block more than printing it, so I will continue to make
new linoleum blocks in editions limited to 100 copies (plus 5 artist's
proofs and a master print). It takes anywhere from a few weeks to a few
months to carve a block. These small editions can be printed in their
entirety and even recent and new blocks not listed here can be cancelled
and offered for sale.
The Incentives
If a block & print have not already been framed, customers can custom
order their choice of matte and frame
at no additional charge: the matte
and frame are included in the price. Another incentive: when ordering
a can celled block, the accompanying print may be ordered hand
colored, (if a copy in black ink exists) for a small, additional
cost. Shipping is free! Most of the
designs may be seen at http://www.replicaprints.com.
